I recently read an article co-authored by one of my mentors, Dr. Rani Polack. The patient testimonial was meaningful to me – as she expressed a barrier to improved health was her inability to cook.
“I […] met with a lovely patient of mine,* She has type 2 diabetes, and has trouble eating a healthy diet. Most of her meals are frozen dinners or takeout, which is all highly processed food with little nutritional value. I asked her if she would like to consult with a nutritionist.
“I have, many times,” she laughed. “They’re all very nice and everything, and it’s all good information, but I can’t cook. I get to the produce section of the grocery store, and I don’t know where to start.” “
Given advice, but no tools or skills to implement, the advice fails to impart the intended outcome.
Fortunately, with a bit guidance and support – we are all able to get cooking and take control of our health. Studies have shown that the act of home cooking can (among other things) improve dietary quality and decrease obesity. The simple act of cooking! No need to chase magical diets, take expensive supplements, or radically alter your relationship with food. For sustainable, long term success in achieving improved health outcomes… take the first step – toward your cutting board with a handful of vegetables!
Now, like the patient states above, advice is nice… but if you don’t know how to complete the tasks at hand, it’s really not helpful. If cooking skills are your barrier, that’s where culinary coaching comes into play. Whether in person or remotely via video conferencing, culinary coaching will give you the tools to get comfortable in your kitchen. You will have your own personal Chef guiding you through each step of the way. I won’t let you get lost in the proverbial produce section!
